Amateur Boxing Weight Class?

June 19th, 2011

Posted by admin in amateur boxing classes | 2 Comments »

I’ve decided I’m going to start training for amateur boxing. I was curious for opinions on what weight class I would fight in. Not my weight now, but whats a feasible weight to drop down to or should I stay at my weight now.

Height: 6’1
Current Weight: 205lbs.( Little loose around the mid section but tight in the arms shoulders ect)
Age: 20

Devote yourself to training (get a trainer) both for:

1. proper technique, and,

2. maximum stamina.

Doing so will bring your body to your best boxing weight.

should want to start boxing?

ok so I’ve been thinking a lot of about starting boxing. i originally wanted to do either jiu-jitsu or krav-maga, but theres almost no places around here, and i have no intention of doing karate or any other style like that, so i decided to do straight up boxing. i turned 15 about a week ago, and i’m 6’1" 215 lb. with a max bench of 255 and a max squat of 475. i know how to box a little because i’m big into MMA. i know like proper stance and i would classify myself as an amateur fighter. I’ve never took any type of classes in boxing so i don’t really know the rules and whatnot. what i’m asking is what weight class would i be in? who would i be fighting (age-weight)? are there a lot of huge kids out there that would kick my ass? is it too late to start? is it dangerous(brain damage)? also, are there tournaments that i could compete in for my age bracket?

Well ur defiantly a big guy, ur no doubt a heavyweight. Very strong for ur age, but power is only part of it. You need to find a local boxing gym and talk to the trainers in there they’ll help you out, even if they don’t train youth boxers they’ll point u in the right direction.

I’m not that into the amateur, youth boxing, so i dont really know how the weight classes or ages go, but its safe to say you’ll be facing kids ur size and age. U prolly wont even start sparring for at least a few month and might not fight for a year, boxing takes time to learn.

It’s too bad no high schools have boxing teams the way they do wrestling teams, cuz then boxing would be a lot bigger mainstream than it is now and america would have a lot more big pro fighters.

It’s never too late for someone to give boxing a try, but u have to want it. Don’t quit just because training is hard or u lose ur first bout. Kirmit Cintron is a top ranked figher and former welterweight champion and from my understanding, he didn’t start boxing until he was 19, so u can start now and still make a good living if your good enough.

for amateurs, u dont need to worry about injuries. U wear protective head gear in those fights and fights only last 4 rounds. There should be tournaments for kids ur age, but u need to start looking for a boxing gym first. look around online and see what u can find, look for the nearest one and walk in and tell them "i want to be a boxer" and take it from there. I would be best to show up in person as oppose to a phone call or email because coming in person is a lot more respectable and personal. be ready to work as well. good luck.

1. Get into absolute top physical condition, and,

2. Learn to jab.

Yes, it can be dangerous:

1. every blow to the head can kill brain cells

2. every knockout is a concussion and having even one in a lifetime is potentially very serious

3. a detached retina is also possible and can result in a loss of site in the effected eye.

4. do you like being hurt?

How are amateur bouts matched?

I’ve recently started boxing im 16 6ft1 10 stone 7 pounds so does that mean in an amateur bout i’ll be fighting against people my size and weight or are fights matched with different weight and height classes?

it’s always about weight first but your age also plays into what your asking but there’s never a height limit

now if your trainer picks your opponents then you may fight a shorter or taller guy b/c your trainer thinks you need practice against whichever size..

how is my routine for boxing?

I have a hurt hand so I’m limited ..well its my wrist so keep that in mind and also remember I am trying to drop weight and I have boxing class’s and am only aiming to be an amateur ..for now anyway..

I sleep from 11-12pm depending on when I fall asleep ( insomnia) wake up at 6:30 am-7:00 am everyday

- I do 50 cruches 50 jumping jacks 5 mins of running in place with my hands up even running while shadow boxing .. 25 dips twice between crunches and jumping jacks I do this at the very least three times a day , along with alot of shadow boxing and stance manuevering ( balancing myself in my stance making actual fight movements at full speed like dipping , dodging , blocking , countering, power punching basically an imaginary fight ) , leg lifts I do while do crunches then I do normal crunches then I do reg leg lifts

-also do lunges? or something where you dip down from a standing position then jump up land do it again 25 times

I also do this pilates? where your in a push up position except on your forearms instead of hands (my wrist..) , I do as much walking as I can but I am sort of on lockdown ( probation likes to know where I am )

- I eat oatmeal with green tea ( I have green tea twice a day with chamomile tea at night) or cereal like honey nut cheerios every morning

- then eat a fruit about 2 hours later with a slimfast 321 plan shake

- I eat lunch 3 hours later usually a sandwhich like turkey on wheat bread with lettuce , or a hamburger with lots of veggies ( garlic , peppers , onions , lettuce ) no butter or toppings

- then I have some carrots 3 hours later and maybe a banana later on if we have bananas

- dinner usually lots of veggies with chicken small amount of pasta and slim fast

I don’t eat over 2,000 calories a day I would even estimate around 1,400-1,600 depending on the dinner ( I don’t get to choose …)

on top of all that I drink about a gallon of water a day , take a multivitamin every other day , oxy pro elite 2 pills a day , adderall xr in the am ( prescribed but helps burn off excess water ..) , I drink a whey protein shake when I get a great workout in ( when my hands healed) ,

also take modern bcaas , l-carnitine 1500 mgs in the am , my water is vitamin b enhanced , omega 3 fish oil and CLA 2 pills twice a day with biggest meal , recreate ( another diet pill ) and sometimes powerfull and pink magic ( days i get to my class’s/gym ..usually at least twice a week for over an hour)

Oh add to that I do a leg press around 210 lbs 35 reps stop then 35 then stop I have no idea how many times but for an hour long with almost no breaks ( very short for water/bathroom )

I also sit around in 71 degrees heat ( work out in it as well ) with a sweatshirt and pants at least (plus shirt and under garments) and a winter hat to increase sweating .. and even when sitting I do movements with my legs , when standing I’m on my toes bouncing , when laying I do leg lifts , ab work outs so on

- forgot to mention I also stretch pretty much every which way I can and I am 5’9" at 168-173 (weight keeps bouncing)

- now is this a decent workout and when I get my hand back to full health I will have heavy bag , speed bag , punching mits learning combos , push ups , barbell , free weights you get the idea ..

so really 2 questions , how does my workout and diet hold up for now and how about later on with my hand back?

sorry that is so long but is this decent and am I on the right track at least ?
to thomas? thanks and great push up work out I will def do that I cannot wait to have my hand back lol

as far as the whey protein and the 1s you suggested I actually have whey iso with all the aminos and my modern bcaas by usp labs really helps keep muscles ( I have bearly lost anything in my arms and when I 1st hurt my hand I had to stop working my arm out all together even hard to bounce..) I left out a few details on the supplements I take b/c this was so long already and alot of ppl not only frown on supplements or doubt them but some don’t care to hear about them so I left it as basic as possible but thanks for the suggestion and explanation ..

are you a power puncher? thanks alot for the advice I love hearing from actual boxers .. I’m gonna wait and see if some more answers come in though but if you have any tips to help me out email them or edit your answer ( I take boxing really serious and love it ) thnx again

I would love more leg and neck work outs what else is there though without a hand no treadmill or bike or stationary bike or jump rope ! ( that 1 sucks so I do pretend 1s ) neck and shoulder rolls i always do for a stretch as well but without a hand working the upper body is hard really ..

as for legs I’m sure there are work outs I don’t do but I do use 3 machines leg press is just my favorite I also do the 2 where you bend your legs either in or out to move the weights..

In amateur you shouldn’t worry about dieting to much. But I like to call what your doing "Eating healthy". While you eat some oatmeal drink a protein shake. Buy casein protein powder and way iso. One is fast acting the other is long lasting. It helps keep your muscle where it is and makes it a little bit easier for muscle building. Another thing I would suggest is squat jumps you go down into a squat then you power up and jump off the ground. Here I’ll give you a push up workout that I do. I realize your wrist is hurt but once it heals try it.
25 normal push ups (biceps, depending on how you do ‘normal’)
25 tight arm push ups (Bring elbows against ribcage and keep the arms tight to your body, triceps)
25 wide arm push ups (Spread your arms wide for this chest workout)
25 diamond chest push ups (make a diamond shape with your hands and place it directly under your chest, then push up, triceps)
15 jump and clap plyo push ups (Push up in normal position then clap your hands)
15 jumping plyo ppush ups (pushup and you want your whole body to leave the ground even your feet)
10 static push ups (Down , then up for 20 seconds then back down then up for another 20 seconds, repeat 10 times)
If you can do that exactly at first just start with: 15,15,15,15,10,10,5
By the way your workout is very good.

Should I go to train at Wild Card boxing club?

April 2nd, 2011

Posted by admin in amateur boxing classes | 2 Comments »

My goal is to fight in amateur boxing and of course be good at it. I have two choices either Freddy Roach’s Wild Card BC or John Mcarthy’s Ultimate Training gym. At John Mcarthy’s gym I will attend 3 group classes a week and use the other days to just train on my own (bags, shadow, footwork, weightlifting, cardio). Unforunately im on a budget and if I attend Wild Card boxing since they only offer private training I will be able to attend private training 1 and sometimes 2 times a week and the other days i will be training on my own (bags, shadow, footwork, weightlifting, cardio).

Im looking for some credible advice… which gym should i attend?

3 classes a week and 2 self training or 1 private training and 4 self training days???

sparring is not an issue both gyms offer different days to spar.

WildCard hands down.

Why didn’t Bruce Lee enter amateur boxing tournaments or pro martial arts tornaments?

March 27th, 2011

Posted by admin in amateur boxing classes | 6 Comments »

I have read on sites that people thnik Bruce Lee would have beat Ali and Tyson in the ring or on the street and some people saying he wouldn’t have stood a chance as he was just an actor and real fighters like Ali and Tyson who would have been too tall, too fast, too strong and too experienced and would have put Lee in the morgue with one punch. So why didn’t Lee enter amateur boxing tournaments ie the Olympics to convince his deluded fans even more and convice his doubters a little bit? Couldn’t have entered the Amateur World Boxing Championships as they weren’t inaugurated until 1974, after Lee’s tragic death. So why do some deluded people think he was, is and will be the best there ever will be as he doesn’t have a pro fight to his name lol? And why didn’t he enter martial arts tournaments in karate, judo and kickboxing as he would have undoubtedly studied them as well? And he could have entered amateur boxing and fencing tournaments at the Olympics – while he was working on his book The Tao OF Jeet Kune Do – as he studied them as well. So how can he be the best fighter ever when he never fought professionally at any level or never fought as an amateur either lol? I know he won some amateur boxing tournament while still at high school in China. But what does that prove as he would have been boxing unskilld bums? And he has apparently conquered numerous people in battles in the streets of China and probably America in streetfights. But who hasn’t had fights against some average Joe on the streets lol? I am not being a crusader as I am normally a fan of Lee’s movies and philosophies but he wouldn’t stand a chance against Ali or Tyson or any other decent pro fighter in any discipline on the street or in a ring as they actually fight and have experience of fighting and being hit whereas Lee hasn’t. I will admit he was in phenomenal shape and could apparently perform numerous feats with weights and coins etc. But what does that have to do with real fighting against world class opposition in combat? He he was such a great fighter he would have enrolled or enrolled for qualification in boxing, karate, fencing, kickboxing, taekwondo and wrestling but chose not to. If I studied all those disciplines and thought I was good at them then I know I would have tried to enter them. And if you are going to compare Ali or Tyson to any martial artist from the past then compare him to Chuck Norris as Chuck actually fought professionally and was a three time karate champion and is a grandmaster of various styles as well as an 8th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster.
Martial Arts were around then lol.
….morel erel
morel orel even lol
Tyler Dirden read my question again, I said why didn’t he try and enter or qualifying for amateur tournaments ie Olympics. And get it right in Bruce’s day to qualify for the Olympics you had to be either the national AAU winner, the national Golden Gloves, winner, the winners from the East and far Wesr, and each of the four military service champs (the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines). So Bruce would have had to have entered – which I already said – and one one of those before the Olympic trials lol. I learned that from my George Foreman autobiography a long time ago.

Chuck Norris went from karate tournaments to acting.
Bruce Lee was a martial arts expert who taught classes and got into acting.
I have known several martial arts instructors who never compete in tournaments and do not want their students doing so either.
Their theory is that tournaments have rules that don’t allow certain actions, and when you are in the street you can not think about what is legal or not legal you must react without thinking.
Lee was an outstanding athlete and could have done well, but that was not his objective in life.

how good are the people in amateur boxing?

March 25th, 2011

in the welterweight class? i know this is a hard question but please give me a example

I know for a fact that Sugar Ray Leonard was a former amateur standout and gold medal winner in the welterweight division in the 1976 Olympics. I think Donald Curry too was an amateur standout and an Olympic medalist in the division. Aaron Pryor and Thomas Hearns also had outstanding amateur stints in the division. I guess, Andre Berto too was an outstanding amateur boxer in the welterweights. Floyd Mayweather started as an outstanding featherweight in the amateur but he begun his pro career as a Jr. lightweight and proceeded to climb up in weight to the welters and the jr. middle, winning world titles along the way. The good people now in that class in the amateurs are Europeans, notably French, Eastern Europeans or Eurasians like Russians, Kazakhs and Uzbeks, and traditional powers Cubans and a sprinkling of Americans, Thais and Koreans.

In amateur boxing, if I weighed 155, what is the highest possible weight one of my opponents could be?

Like would I be better off going down/up a few pounds if I could. (what weight class would I be in, and what would I need to lose to go down a class or gain to be the heaviest within the weight class I would already be in at 155)

well welterweight in amateur boxing is 152 lbs so you be best droping a few pounds to compete at that weight the next weight would be middleweight at 165 lbs so ud be a welterweight
